The Meaning of Self-Determination
The word self-determination is made up of two words – ‘self’ and ‘determination’. The Oxford dictionary defines these words as :
‘Self’ – a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action.
‘Determination’ is the quality of being determined; firmness of purpose; the process of establishing something exactly by calculation or research; the controlling or deciding of the nature or outcome of something.
And so it follows that the starting point to achieving self-determination is to “know thyself”. This means being aware of and understanding your own capabilities, weaknesses, and desires. Having a clear sense of self-awareness and purpose is essential to achieving anything in life. Without it, we would simply be drifting along aimlessly. So if you want to start taking control of your life and making things happen, the first step is to get to know yourself better.
